Meet the Players

  • Chris

George Christopher Vance was born in London in 1971 and spent most of his childhood in Bristol, England and in Longford, Ireland. He graduated from Newcastle University.

Chris is a Civil Engineer who has worked extensively in water infrastructure projects across the globe. He is a writer, actor, producer and author. He is founder and co-director of Oratales, a publishing and production company focused on the promotion of language, learning, and empathy across multiple platforms.

Chris is passionate about the preservation of, and universal access to clean water. He is an ardent supporter of language in all forms that expand learning and awareness. He is critical of the insipid growth of the attention economy and believes that better regulation might stem the tide of harm it is inflicting upon developing beings universally.

Chris believes the contribution to world health, peace and happiness made by Arthur Guinness is massively underrated, even to this day.

  • Nikki

I’m a clinical pharmacist with a specialist passion for menopause - supporting women as they step (sometimes tumble) into the next chapter of life with confidence, clarity, and a healthy dose of humour. I’m currently writing a book to shine a light on this major life transition that has a habit of arriving unannounced, under-explained, and wildly misunderstood.

I am the proud mum of three kids who’ve inherited my love of sport. After many happy years on the hockey pitch, I’ve swapped astroturf for barbells and now fully embrace the wonderfully humbling world of CrossFit - proof that reinvention doesn’t have an age limit.

Personally and professionally I’m leaning into a new chapter focused on slowing down, being present, and living with intention - something I believe becomes even more vital later in life.

Growing up we disappeared into the woods, made up games, and let our imaginations run wild. Today, presence and deep attention feel like endangered skills. I believe they are worth protecting. For each of us, and for future generations.

That belief led us to found Oratales, an independent Publishing and Production company devoted to deeper reading, restored attention, through thoughtful storytelling. Because often the most powerful medicine isn’t another pill - it’s space, story, and the courage to pause

  • Rory

Rory was born in London in the early seventies. His family background is Civil Engineering and most of his teenage summers were spent on a variety of construction sites across England and Wales.

In his twenties he co-founded a business selling marketing services to CPA's, building one of the UK’s largest networks of professional services firms before selling out to a European rival. His next adventure involved founding an educational software company. The early days of building a tech start-up were an exhilarating and occasionally bruising experience but taught him the value of persistence. Years later the business was bought by a US software company and continues to thrive to this day.

His proudest achievements are the works he did with Make-A-Wish Foundation, helping to grant over 50 wishes.

An entrepreneur at heart, his current goal is to help find and promote original, entertaining, long-form stories. He thinks it would be nice to spread a little joy in the world and believes life is all about the journey and the people one meets along the way.

Oh, and he has never grown a beard.

The Origin: Why ‘Oratales’?

The name is a synthesis of time, voice, and light. It is our mission statement hidden in a single word

The Time (Yóhr / Hora): We operate at the "ripe" or "eventful" time — creating work that is seasonal in its relevance but timeless in its quality.

The Voice (Ora): From the Latin for "mouths," we prioritize the intimacy of the human voice, the nuance of tone, and the lost art of listening.

The Vision (Orah / Õra): We seek the "illumination" of the Hebrew Orah and the "wide-angle depth" of the Latin Õra. We look to the margins and the edges to find the stories within us all.
