Empathy = Language × Awareness²

It’s the way we see things. This equation is offered as a conceptual model rather than a doctrine.

E = L x A²

Not energy from matter, but empathy from language and awareness.

It proposes a relationship between three variables central to cultural continuity.

Our Definitions

Language
Language refers to the symbolic systems through which human beings transfer knowledge, memory, value, and experience across individuals and generations. This includes all oral/spoken, written, visual, and digital forms. It includes mathematics, dance, science, sculpture and many more.

Awareness
Awareness refers to the capacity to recognise context, consequence, and the interior experience of others. It includes self-awareness, perspective-placement and situational understanding. Conscious Attention.

Empathy
Empathy is defined here as the stabilising outcome of language used with sufficient awareness. It reflects the ability of individuals and communities to recognise shared humanity and to coordinate behaviour accordingly.

The Squared Term

The squared term attached to awareness is deliberate.

In Einstein’s equation, E = mc² the speed of light (vacuum and gravity depending) is squared because it is a constant of reality. It scales everything.

In mathematics, squaring a variable alters scale non-linearly. Small changes in the variable produce disproportionately large effects in the outcome.

Our model suggests that awareness operates in a similar way within human systems. Incremental increases in contextual and self-reflective awareness can generate substantial increases in empathy. Conversely, reductions in awareness result in rapid declines in empathic capacity.

Language without awareness becomes propaganda.

Awareness without language becomes inarticulate feeling. Isolation.

When awareness deepens, empathy does not grow linearly. It accelerates.

One unit of awareness allows me to notice you. Two units allow me to notice myself noticing you.

The model therefore predicts asymmetry:

  • An increase in language without a corresponding increase in awareness does not increase empathy proportionally.

  • A decrease in awareness, even in the presence of abundant language, reduces empathy significantly.

Contemporary Application

Modern societies exhibit unprecedented levels of linguistic output. Communication technologies amplify expression across platforms and borders. Constant bloody speech but shallow context.

Increased communication volume does not guarantee increased empathy.

Where awareness is shallow, fragmented, or reactive, language may amplify misunderstanding rather than understanding.

This model offers a structural explanation:

If awareness does not scale alongside language, empathy declines.

Because awareness is squared, small erosions in reflective capacity may have outsized cultural effects.

Importantly to us: The equation does not assign blame. It describes a relationship.

Stress testing E = L x A²

L increases but A decreases

Noise. Rhetoric. Manipulation.

A increases but L decreases

Isolation. Loneliness. Deep feelings unheard and not transmitted.

A² increases?

Empathy scales disproportionately. In human development, growth is not additive. It compounds.

A proposition for moral physics:

Every thought carries a small amount of mass.

In physics, thoughts are electrochemical events. Neurons fire. Ions move. Energy flows. Thanks to Einstein, we know energy and mass are convertible.

So is a thinking brain slightly heavier than a resting one?

Does Love have a greater stabilising mass than hate?

In physics, mass curves spacetime. Greater the mass, the stronger the gravitational pull.

Lets try to translate this metaphorically: The heavier the thought, the more it bends the field of human reality.

Hate spreads fast. But it’s unstable. It fragments. Fission.

Love builds. Fusion. Accumulation.

Hate is high-energy radiation. Intense. Brief. Destructive.

Love is a starlike entity. Sustained. Long burning. Life-generating.

Sociology wrapped in cosmology, perhaps:

Stories are gravitational bodies. Language can bend the future.

Enduring systems are built from high-mass interior states.

Awareness squared increases empathy.

Empathy increases stabilising mass, which determines civilisational orbit.

How about them apples Sir Isaac Newton?

The future of civilisation is not about producing more speech. It’s about deepening awareness, of self, of context, of history, of consequence.

Shallow context: Abundant language. Thin awareness. Low friggin’ empathy. BS on the rise everywhere.

Intergenerational Transfer

Cultural endurance depends on the accurate transfer of knowledge across generations.

Language is the transmission mechanism. Awareness determines the fidelity of that transmission.

When awareness is present, language carries nuance, context, and responsibility.

When awareness diminishes, language becomes distorted or captured by attention economies offering distraction over meaning and enlightenment.

Empathy, in this model, is an indicator of transmission quality.

Some people have already given up on the present developing minds our society is reliant on for the future.

It’s easy to appoint blame towards the impacts of unregulated social media expansion, or piss poor parenting.

Here at Oratales, we haven’t given up and we certainly won’t be assigning blame or walking away.

A Working Model

This equation is not meant to be empirical law. It is a heuristic.

It invites examination: extrapolation: trial and error:

  • Does increasing awareness improve the quality of dialogue?

  • Does decreased awareness correlate with polarisation?

  • Does language used without reflection reduce trust?

Pick a question. Ask one of your own. We’d love to know what you think.

If our hybrid mathematical/language relationship holds,

does strengthening awareness become central to cultural stability?

Imagine Collective Awareness²

Would it lead to

Cultural Maturity?

Conclusion or Questions or Both

Empathy is not treated here as sentiment. It is treated as structural. Language is abundant.
Awareness determines its effect.

Empathy emerges where language and awareness are aligned.

The equation is offered as a LENS through which to observe contemporary communication.

Perhaps inspiring consideration into the conditions required for long-term cultural endurance.

Empathy = Language × Awareness²

The equation is offered as a lens rather than a directive.

It proposes that the quality of humanity’s systems is shaped not by the volume of language produced,

but by the awareness with which it is transmitted.

Oratales adopts this framework as a guide in the creation and curation of stories intended to endure.

Readers, viewers, collaborators: you are invited to test the model against your own observations.
